How to Plan an Engagement Session That Actually Feels Like a Date

Picture

Let’s be honest for a second: the idea of an engagement session can feel a little... intimidating.

For most couples, the thought of standing in a field for an hour while someone points a camera at them is the opposite of relaxing. It brings up all those awkward questions.

What do I do with my hands? Where do I look? Am I supposed to just smile the whole time?

At Ramey Photo Co., we prioritize wellness and mental health matters. That means the experience of taking photos should never feel stressful, performative, or draining. It should feel comfortable like self-care. It should be a chance to pause and reflect on this incredibly short, special season of your life.

If you are planning your engagement photos in Bozeman or Big Sky, here is the secret: Don't plan a photoshoot. Plan a date, and let me tag along.

Here is your honest guide to designing a session that feels vintage, bright, and 100% you.

1. Choose a Location That Speaks to Your "Vibe"(Not Just the Trends). Bozeman is stunning, and it’s easy to feel pressured to go to the same three mountain overlooks that everyone else uses.

But ask yourself...does hiking a steep ridge at 5 AM feel like you? Or does grabbing a cocktail downtown feel more authentic?

We specialize in highlighting the individual, which means your location should reflect your actual personality.

  • The "Artsy & Modern" Vibe... Let’s hit Main Street. We can use the brick textures, the neon signs of the Rialto, and the clean lines of local coffee shops. This fits perfectly with a modern Art Deco or editorial style.

  • The "Wild & Adventurous" Vibe... If you feel most at peace outdoors, let’s go to Hyalite or drive out toward Paradise Valley. But let’s make it an activity, bring a picnic blanket, bring your dogs, bring a bottle of champagne.

  • The "Vintage & Classic" Vibe... Think about places with character. Old libraries, classic car shows, or even your own living room with some vinyl records playing.

2. How to Nail the "Vintage/Bright" Look.

One of the most common questions I get is, "What should we wear?"

If you love the Ramey Photo Co. aesthetic that mixes warm, retro tones with bright, honest editing... your outfit choices play a huge role.
We love a palette that feels like a "Retro-Coastal" dream. Think warm terracotta, deep emerald greens, soft sands, and denim blues.

  • Instead of busy prints that distract from your faces, choose interesting fabrics. Corduroy jackets, silk slip dresses, chunky knit sweaters, or worn-in denim. These textures add depth to your photos and give them that tactile, classic feel.

  • Wear clothes you can move in. If you can’t run, sit on the ground, or lift your arms, you’re going to feel stiff. We want you to feel wild and free.

  • A wide-brim hat, some vintage sunglasses, or a cool pair of boots can completely transform a simple outfit into something editorial and artsy.

3. Focus on "Doing" Instead of "Posing". The best way to eliminate awkwardness is to give yourself a task, something to do. Give yourself permission to just be you, and link your breath with your movement. We want to capture beautiful moments, not static poses.

When we plan your session, I’ll encourage you to incorporate an activity that you genuinely enjoy.
  • Do you love skiing? Let’s hit the slopes for a few runs.
  • Are you big foodies? Let’s grab a slice of pizza on the curb or share an ice cream.
  • Do you love the water? Let’s roll up our jeans and wade into the river (yes, even if it’s chilly!).

When you are focused on the activity and on each other, you forget the camera is there. That is when the magic happens. That is when we get the honest, unposed laughter that makes your gallery feel unique.

4. The "Pause" ButtonWedding planning is chaotic. It involves spreadsheets, budgets, family opinions, and endless decisions. Your engagement session is the antidote to that.
We treat these sessions as a time to leave your worries behind. For 90 minutes, nobody is asking you about the seating chart. It’s just you, your partner, and the beautiful Montana landscape.

I always tell my couples, just take a breath. Look at the mountains. Look at the person you’re about to marry. This is a celebration of now.

5. Why "Honest" Photos Age Better.

Trends come and go. Filters that turn the grass brown or make everyone look orange will eventually look dated. But honest, colorful, and bright images? Those are classic.

By focusing on real skin tones and authentic emotions, we are creating images that will still look like you in 20 or 50 years. We want you to look back at these photos and remember exactly how you felt—the excitement, the butterflies, and the fun.

Ready to plan a date night? Whether you want to run through the snow in Big Sky or grab a beer in Bozeman, I’m ready to tag along and capture the fun.
